Esplanade Presents
23 Sep 2022, Fri, 7.30pm
(Intermission: None)
Esplanade Concert Hall
Following the nationwide acclaim of her 2021 song, The Road Ahead, and international recognition from Billboard and BBC, Singaporean singer-songwriter Linying brings her confessional songwriting to the big stage in a one-night only event at the Esplanade Concert Hall.
The starlet’s debut album There Could Be Wreckage Here was released earlier this year. An authentic and heartfelt approach to love, self-discovery and the human condition, the album features collaborators like Chris Walla of Death Cab For Cutie and was also named one of NPR’s top albums in the week of its release.
Titled There’s Still Time, her performance at the Esplanade Concert Hall features a series of never-before-heard songs, played live for the first time ahead of its release, alongside favourites old and new. Opening the show is Sun Cell, an up-and-coming new-wave synth act, whose nostalgic single Landline was named one of Vans Musicians Wanted Top 20 local submissions.
Catch her live and embark on an enthralling journey in the world of Linying!
All patrons (except for children aged 12 and below) need to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. Patrons will be required to verify their vaccination status at the venue. Before she was recognised for her lyrical, heartrending songs, Linying first turned heads in the world of electronic music, where her lush vocals featured on collaborations with renowned DJs Felix Jaehn and Lost Frequencies. These songs amassed over 80 million streams online, accidentally catapulting her into the spotlight.
Proving that this was no fluke, she released her debut single, Sticky Leaves, soon after, which entered Spotify’s Global Viral 50 chart, making her the first Singaporean artist to do so. She is now named one of Spotify Asia's 25 Most Influential Artists Under 25.
Her music has won praise across a diverse, international audience far beyond her hometown of Singapore, from critical tastemakers NPR and Billboard to pop-culture figures Troye Sivan and Perez Hilton. Her debut EP, Paris 12, entered at #1 on the national iTunes charts, as she took on festival performances at Summer Sonic Tokyo, Bigsound Music Festival and SXSW. In addition, Linying also wrote, arranged, produced, and featured on 2021’s rousing and critically-acclaimed Singapore National Day theme song The Road Ahead alongside co-producer Evan Low and fellow artists Sezairi, Shye, and Shabir.
Linying’s debut full-length album There Could Be Wreckage Here dropped 15 October 2021 and is an introspective and intimate exploration of love, transience, and acceptance. The landmark release featured contributions from collaborators such as Myriot (Halsey, Aurora) and Chris Walla (Death Cab for Cutie) and accumulated over 2.5 million lifetime streams. With a follow-up already in the works, Linying’s heart-rending and layered approach to electronic music is set to continue pushing the boundaries of the genre throughout Asia.
Sun Cell
Solo project of farmer turned music producer Daryl Hor, Sun Cell produces synth driven new wave, post-punk influenced alternative music. Initially only known for his engineering work for acts like ROYAL ESTATE and more recently RENE, Daryl was pursuing a Recording Arts degree at Full Sail University before a premature departure from the U.S. amidst the pandemic. Stuck at home, he began writing and producing his own music in his bedroom.
Drawing from the visceral nature of 80’s new wave, the lush soundscapes of more recent chillwave inspirations, and folk-inspired harmonized vocals that explore themes of yearning, retrospection and melancholia, Sun Cell creates a sound that invokes both a nostalgia for days gone, and a yearning for days to come.
Quietly making his official debut under this new moniker in 2022, he has since released his third single ‘Landline’ which shortlisted him in last year’s Van’s Musicians Wanted top 20 local submissions. Although he continues to busy himself working with other artists as an engineer, Daryl is also slated to release more music later this year, while simultaneously creating his first solo body of work under ‘Sun Cell’, set for 2023.
