Varnam: The Colours of Tradition
Synopsis
The varnam which literally translates to colours is the main item and most demanding piece of a traditional bharathanatyam performance. It blends Nritta (pure dance and footwork), Nritya (expressive gestures), and Natya (storytelling).
In this Varnam, audiences are taken on a playful and engaging journey through a one-sided love story. The heroine confides in her friend about her longing for a man, recounting their past encounters and the moments that made her believe there could be something more between them. However, when she realises that her lover does not share the same feelings, she makes the decision to let him go. The second half offers a refreshing perspective on female agency, reminding us that a woman, too, has the power to choose, reject and walk away. But just when you think the story is over, a surprising twist awaits.
