Bebop, Bolero, Bossa & Beyond
Synopsis
Jazz is the art of improvisation across a wide range of musical styles, and the Simplicius Cheong Quintet’s performance showcases their diverse musical influences—from swing and bebop to Latin American rhythms such as bolero, mambo, rumba, samba, and bossa nova. The set includes timeless jazz and Latin classics like Don’t Get Around Much Anymore (Duke Ellington), Quizas, Quizas, Quizas (Osvaldo Farres), and Fascinating Rhythm (Gershwin), alongside original compositions like Bossa Nova Digs Bach. The second set features bebop hits such as Groovin’ High (Dizzy Gillespie), popular standards like Cherokee (Ray Noble) and Afternoon in Paris (John Lewis), and Latin favourites such as Perfidia (Alberto Dominguez) and Four (Miles Davis), highlighting the quintet’s dynamic fusion of styles and improvisational prowess.
