Lagu-Lagu Gambus
Synopsis
At the heart of this performance is the resonant sound of the gambus, a Middle Eastern chordophone, playing the expressive and melodious tunes of traditional Malay music. Through its delicate touch, the gambus brings new colour to familiar tunes, weaving seamlessly with the intricate rhythms and musical forms of the Malay genre.
Tracing a journey through the Malays’ rich cultural history, the performance reveals shared influences between traditional Malay music and Middle Eastern musical traditions. By placing the gambus at the centre of this dialogue, the music moves gently across cultural boundaries, offering a thoughtful and harmonious listening experience that celebrates tradition, exchange and diversity.
Gemadah – Traditional Malay Music Festival is presented by Persatuan Pemuzik Tradisional Melayu Singapura in collaboration with Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay as part of Esplanade's Pentas series.
