Synopsis

Outspoken brings its raucous spoken word competition to Esplanade! Over the course of three rounds, six poets will try to out-rhyme, out-rhythm and out-metaphor each other in a show of sass and vulnerability. Audience members will get to judge the poets, and provide words that they must use in an improvised performance. If you love poetry, this is for you. If you don’t, this might change your mind.

Outspoken has organised spoken word competitions in Singapore since 2022. At each event, poets face off over three rounds, presenting their original works to a lively audience. Judges drawn from the audience score each poem after it is read. A highlight is the improvised round, where poets write pieces based on words provided by the audience. Outspoken has taken this format across several venues in Singapore, and has partnered with Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay, Singapore Writers Festival, and National Library Board. It is proudly brought to you by poets Cheyenne Alexandria Phillips and Don Shiau.
