Chinese Dance Fiesta 2026: Kunwu Intensive Dance Workshop
In collaboration with Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay (Singapore)
Synopsis
Kunwu is a contemporary dance style originating from kunqu, one of the oldest and most refined styles of traditional Chinese opera. Developed by first-class choreographer Professor Ma Jiaqin, kunwu extracts the finest elements of kunqu, creating a new art form rich in the essence of Jiangnan culture and humanistic emotion. Since its inception in 2003, this gentle art formhas emerged as the fourth major style of Chinese classical dance, following the schools of shenyun, han tang and dunhuang.
Led by Professor Ma, this four-day intensive workshop is designed for experienced dancers aged 18 and above with at least 10 years of dance training.
Participants will gain in-depth exposure to the kunwu style, deepening artistic understanding and expanding their movement vocabulary under the guidance of the master artist.
