Synopsis

Zeng Guofan was a key figure in modern Chinese history. Despite his humble background, average talents, and poor health, he rose to great success during one of China's most chaotic periods. His achievements were rooted in his unique life philosophy of “Shang Zhuo”—valuing simplicity and “clumsiness.” This talk explores how Zeng triumphed by being a “fool,” relying on “foolish” people, and doing things the “foolish” way—turning simplicity into strength.

There will be a book-signing session after the talk.

Zhang Hongjie

Zhang Hongjie, born in 1972, is a leading Chinese historian and writer known for his accessible yet scholarly works. He explores historical figures and institutions with depth and modern insight. His major works include The Seven Faces of the Ming Dynasty, The Hungry Prosperity, and The Evolution of Chinese National Character. His works often analyse history from unique perspectives, restoring the true image of historical figures while offering them relevance through modern reflection.
