Jeffrey is known as one of Singapore’s most accomplished dancers, choreographers and dance educators. His illustrious career includes serving as the Principal Dancer with Singapore’s premier ballet company, the Singapore Dance Theatre. He has also held prominent roles such as Regional Director of the Singapore Dance Alliance and Principal of One Dance Asia. Jeffrey has choreographed major projects such as the National Day Parade and the Shanghai World Expo. Currently, he is the Artistic Director of the National Contemporary Ballet.

With over 25 years of teaching experience, Jeffrey has worked with a diverse range of students, from young children to professional dancers. He specialises in ballet and contemporary dance, with a focus on a holistic and inclusive pedagogy that values discipline, creativity and self-expression.

How did you get into teaching?

I was inspired to teach by my most excellent mentor, Mr Anthony Then, who offered me a scholarship to train at the Singapore Ballet Academy. His guidance and support throughout my early career, including pushing me to take my Royal Academy of Dance examinations and sending me to international competitions, profoundly influenced me to pursue a career in teaching and sharing my passion for dance.

Have there been challenges in your teaching journey?

There have been challenging times, especially when dealing with cultural differences and varying expectations from students, parents and guardians. What keeps me going is the students' dedication and hard work, the support of parents and colleagues and the joy of seeing them grow and achieve their goals.

“The values of self-reflection, courage,
humility and respect also help me navigate
challenging times.“

What do you find most rewarding about your work?

Teaching allows me to share my passion for dance and inspire the next generation of dancers. The most rewarding aspect of my work is observing my students’ progress and success, whether in competitions, performances or personal growth.

I have also helped my students with auditions and getting them into overseas vocational schools such as the English National Ballet, Rambert School of Dance and the New Zealand School of Dance. Acknowledging and appreciating the hard work of everyone involved in the journey is deeply fulfilling.

What are your hopes for every batch of students you encounter?

My hope for every batch of students is that they develop a strong foundation in dance, grow as individuals and find joy and fulfilment in their practice.

I aim to instil values such as discipline, creativity and resilience, and prepare them not just for performances and competitions but for the challenges in life.
