An extraordinary musician and mum
Jimmy & the Magic Key was generously contributed to Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay by Roger Parellada Ferre.
Jimmy & the Magic Key follows Jimmy and his niece Lola on a magical, time-travelling adventure through the world of classical music. With the help of Jimmy's piano, which also doubles as a time machine, they journey into the past to meet some of the greatest composers in history—and lend a helping hand when they need it most!
Clara Schumann (1819 – 1896)
Say it like a maestro: (Klah-rah Shoo-mahn)
Clara Schumann, born Clara Wieck, was a prodigy at the piano from a very young age. She started performing at concerts when she was just nine years old, travelling all across Europe by ship, stagecoach, and even by sleigh!
One day, she met a fellow musician named Robert Schumann, who came to study music with her father. A decade later, they fell in love and got married. They were both passionate about music—and about each other!
Clara wasn’t just a brilliant pianist and composer. She was also a mother to eight children! It wasn’t always easy for Clara to perform her concerts while taking care of her big family. Sometimes, she had to stay home when she was going to have a baby or when Robert was sick and needed help.
Even with these challenges, Clara kept going. She found a way to balance being a mother, wife, composer, and world-famous pianist. She even became one of the most important musicians of her time!
Clara loved music and composing. She once said,
“There is nothing greater than the joy of composing something oneself, and then listening to it.”
Clara’s story reminds us how much love and care our mums give us every single day. So this Mother’s Day, let’s all say a big thank you and give a big hug to all the amazing mothers out there!
