Jimmy & the Magic Key was generously contributed to Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay by Roger Parellada Ferre.

Jimmy & the Magic Key follows Jimmy and his niece Lola on a magical, time-travelling adventure through the world of classical music. With the help of Jimmy's piano, which also doubles as a time machine, they journey into the past to meet some of the greatest composers in history—and lend a helping hand when they need it most!

What does summer sound like to you? Birds chirping? Ice clinking in a cold drink? Or maybe the heat waves themselves sing a tune? When Antonio Vivaldi loses his inspiration, Jimmy and Lola help him rediscover it by encouraging him to appreciate the wonderful seasons!

Antonio Vivaldi (1678 – 1741)

Say it like a maestro: (Ahn-toh-nyoh Vee-vahl-dee)

Antonio Vivaldi was born in Venice, Italy… in the middle of an earthquake! A dramatic arrival for someone who would make a big impact in the music world.

But Vivaldi didn’t originally plan to be a musician. He was training to become a priest. He was even nicknamed il Prete Rosso (the red priest), because of his curly red hair! However, Vivaldi had asthma, which meant he couldn’t conduct mass. So, he began focusing on something else he loved—music!

He started composing, especially for his favourite instrument, the violin. His music was so good that it impressed many important people, including the governor of Mantua, Pope Benedict XIII, and even the Holy Roman Emperor.

Vivaldi’s most famous work is Le Quattro Stagioni (The Four Seasons). It’s a set of four violin concertos, and each one paints a wondrous musical picture of a different season.

In spring, Vivaldi used bright, lively sounds to depict babbling brooks and lovely bird song. Then summer comes with its slow, sleepy heat and buzzing insects. Autumn is a season of harvest, with singing and dancing in celebration. After, winter arrives with the sharp, chilly sounds of cold winds and footsteps crunching on ice. Vivaldi managed to capture how each season made him feel, all in a beautiful piece of music!

You may have heard The Four Seasons without even realising it. It’s been featured in TV shows like Wednesday and The Crown. Even K-Pop group ATEEZ used part of the Summer concerto in their version of Rhythm Ta.

So, the next time you’re on a walk, take some time to listen to the sounds of nature and the world around you. Who knows? Just like Vivaldi, you might find yourself inspired by Earth’s beautiful song!
