Ep.3

They know better than anyone, that culture needs time and freedom – to germinate, to mature, and find an identity. In Episode 3 of BACKLINES, weish speaks with veterans who have been instrumental to the alternative music scene as we know it today; The Observatory, who run Black Axis and serve a niche but important community that pushes sonic boundaries; and SIAL, who have also run spaces that lie at the core of our punk and hardcore scenes. Together, they reflect on their learnings over the years, and negotiating ethics and values in a highly structured landscape.

In BACKLINES, local artist WEISH takes us deep into the heart of Singapore’s alternative music scene to visit five independent spaces that have become homes to the community, and meet the people who built them.

Through heartfelt conversations and immersive performances across genres and generations, we celebrate some of Singapore’s most exciting musicians and vital individuals who continue to build culture from the ground up, one room at a time.

In this intimate portrait of the music ecosystem, they reflect on formative spaces past and present, why physical spaces continue to matter, and uncover the stories, friendships, and quiet acts of perseverance behind every open door.

Co-producers: Chew Wei Shan (WEISH) and Marc Gabriel Loh
Director: Marc Gabriel Loh
Technical Director: Ian Lee of PK Records
Director of Photography: Gareth Christopher of PK Records
