When Guqin Meets Nanyang traces the evolving journey of the Guqin within Singapore's multicultural landscape. Rooted in the traditions of Chinese literati culture, yet shaped by the artistic environment of the Nanyang, the programme presents the Guqin not merely as an ancient instrument, but as a living voice in contemporary artistic dialogue.
Curated and performed by Gao Weiwei, the concert brings together distinguished musicians from Singapore and China in collaborations featuring voice, xiao, sheng, zhongruan, harp, piano and percussion. The programme spans traditional masterpieces, newly reconstructed historical works, contemporary compositions, and chamber collaborations, reflecting both inheritance and innovation in modern Guqin practice.
Many of the featured works are closely connected to the development of Singapore's contemporary Guqin scene, including commissioned compositions from the Singapore International Guqin Competition and works premiered at the Singapore Guqin Arts Festival. Together, they highlight the growing role of Singapore as a meeting point for tradition, creativity and cultural exchange.
Through dialogues between ancient melodies and contemporary expression, When Guqin Meets Nanyang reflects Gao Weiwei's artistic journey in Singapore. Here, the timeless voice of the Guqin encounters the sounds, textures and sensibilities of the Nanyang, revealing how an art form shaped by millennia of tradition continues to renew itself across cultures and generations.
