Arts in Health

Healing through the arts

The field of arts in health is gaining momentum, with growing evidence that the arts bring positive health outcomes. In line with national movements like Healthier SG, we support arts-based approaches that enhance emotional wellbeing, strengthen social connection and support persons living with chronic illnesses and their caregivers.

Through initiatives such as Arts on Prescription, we work with healthcare and community partners to explore how the arts can complement care and support holistic wellbeing.

In healthcare settings, our programmes offer a different lens to recovery and rehabilitation. Live performances shift the focus from illness to joy and human connection. Beyond clinical spaces, our arts programmes provide safe and supportive environments for participants to process diagnoses, build resilience and foster meaningful bonds with others through shared creative experiences.

When Music Meets Life

When Music Meets Life brings live performances beyond Esplanade’s stages into hospitals, hospices, nursing homes and community care settings across Singapore.

Designed for individuals who may face health, mobility or access barriers, these performances create moments of joy, comfort and connection through shared musical experiences. Programmes are delivered both in-person and virtually, allowing even home-bound participants to engage with artists and live performances from wherever they are.

Since 2018, close to 20,000 beneficiaries, patients and caregivers have experienced these performances across healthcare and community settings.

A Ray of Sunshine

For children with chronic health conditions, it can be challenging to participate in public events due to their complex medical needs. Outside of care settings, there is also a dearth of accessible and inclusive arts-based programmes for these children and their families.

In 2023, we conceived A Ray of Sunshine – a by-invite-only experience specially designed for families to bond and experience a performance in a safe and welcoming environment without fear of judgement. The post-show activities allowed families to mingle further and build meaningful connection with one another.

The programme aims to be uplifting arts experience that brings gentle moments of joy and hope, while supporting the emotional wellbeing of caregivers by creating an opportunity for respite and shared memories.
