Young people today face complex challenges as they find their place in the world. They often lack safe spaces where they can navigate and articulate these challenges—especially if they have experienced situations like abuse, trauma and crime.
The arts provide a unique opportunity for youths to reflect, express and heal. In our programmes for youths in residential care, songwriting and applied theatre serve as valuable tools for self-discovery and emotional growth. They foster a sense of identity and belonging that is crucial to youths, and in doing so builds character and personhood.
Songwriting for Hope

Since 2017, Songwriting for Hope has engaged youths from residential care settings through a structured songwriting journey centred on reflection, healing and hope.
In partnership with Diamonds on the Street, participants are guided through lyric-writing and music composition processes that encourage them to reflect on personal experiences, articulate emotions and imagine positive futures for themselves.
Supported by artist-facilitators, caseworkers and Esplanade volunteers, the programme provides a safe and nurturing environment where youths are empowered to express their authentic voices with courage, agency and hope.
Theatre for Dreams
In partnership with Oniatta Effendi, the Theatre for Dreams programme uses drama, language, and movement to encourage youths to identify their goals and consider how to bring these into reality.
Since 2017, this programme has engaged multiple cohorts of youth in residential care. Many come with a deep need for belonging, a tendency towards risk-taking, and challenges in managing strong emotions.
The programme encourages youths to imagine positive possibilities for their futures while strengthening empathy, confidence and emotional awareness.
At their graduation showcase at Esplanade, participants share their dreams and aspirations with invited audiences – creating opportunities for affirmation, encouragement and community support.
