Has a piece of music ever reminded you of a city?

George Gershwin is on the lookout for new ideas for his symphony orchestra concert. Jimmy and Lola join him on a musical adventure around New York—from classical concerts and jazz clubs to bumpy train rides—on a quest for inspiration!

George Gershwin (1898 – 1937)

Say it like a maestro: (Jorj Gursh-win)

George Gershwin was born in 1898 in New York, to a family who moved from Russia to America.

He would go on to become one of the most famous American composers. As a child, he was full of energy—playing games and running with his friends. He would rather play on the streets of New York than practise music like his siblings. However, all of that changed when he was 10! He heard a friend play the violin, and captivated, he fell in love with the sound of music.

Eager to learn, he started teaching himself how to play the piano. Later, he had musical mentors and lessons, introducing him to more of Europe's classical music traditions.

His first big success was partly by chance. He played Swanee at a party attended by a famed Broadway singer, Al Jolson, who loved the piece so much he included it in one of his shows. This kicked off Gershwin's career composing music for Broadway, an important area in New York where shows like musicals and theatre productions are staged!

One of his most famous works is called Rhapsody in Blue, composed in 1924. Ever the creative and imaginative person, Gershwin merged both European classical music with jazz that was growing more popular. This was quite unlike what had been done before! Gershwin’s refreshing take definitely made its mark on American music.

But where did Gershwin get his inspiration from? Rhapsody in Blue was inspired by a train ride Gershwin took to Boston. He heard the steely rattle-bang of the train; its rhythm and noise were music to his ears. Almost immediately his mind was filled with the rhapsody from start to end, recalling the image of New York awakening, going about its bustling and energetic day.

Listen closely to the sounds of your environment like Gershwin. There is music to be heard and made in every place we are in!
