The Putu Piring Incident at Batu Bulat

Directed and Written by Adib Kosnan
Performed by Dalifah Shahril, Farez Najid and Sugie Phua

Premieres on 5 Oct, Mon, 3pm

Batu Bulat is an island-home to many wonderful villagers. The landscape of Batu Bulat is marked by a hill, many fields for endless hours of fun and an ice-factory. Three characters meet by chance one day, and something good… and bad happens. The story is different for each of them.

An ice-factory prince, an island adventurer, and a putu piring seller all clash in their accounts of what really happened that sunny day by the foot of Bukit Batu Bulat.

Inspired by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s The Danger of a Single Story, this work by Adib Kosnan was created in the 2018 edition of Octoburst! to encourage empathy, active listening and compassion amongst its audience members. The three works were originally presented in various parts of the Esplanade. In the digital version, the three characters will once again come together to share their respective versions of what happened that fateful day and maybe...just maybe, they might learn something new from each other.

The three stories will be accompanied by a guide on empathy and diverse thinking. The guide can be utilised by parents, caregivers and educators.

The Prince of Batu Bulat

Performed by Sugie Phua
Premieres on 5 Oct, Mon, 3pm

An heir to an ice-factory, this perspective sheds light on the ice-factory family of Batu Bulat. He travels an arduous journey every holiday to get to the island getaway and is greeted by warmth and kindness. This compels him to pass on the goodness to others. The true test of his kindness comes in the form of a girl hit by a putu piring tragedy!

Chasing Cows on Batu Bulat

Performed by Farez Najid
Premieres on 5 Oct, Mon, 3.30pm

Learning to cycle was traumatic for him. When he first came to Batu Bulat, he endured cold showers, a minefield of cow dung, and endless boredom. After much convincing, he finally falls in love with the countryside and learns how to cycle again and get over his fears. Unfortunately, his fears become reality when he is faced with a faulty bicycle.

The Putu Piring Tragedy

Performed by Dalifah Shahril
Premieres on 5 Oct, Mon, at 4pm

She has always loved her life in Batu Bulat. Her daily adventures are punctuated by her love for food, tupperwares of lontong and rendang, and her fears of the ice-people of Batu Bulat. One day, a tragedy (at least to her) hits her while she is on an errand to help Kak Leha sell some scrumptious putu piring.  To her surprise, an act of kindness from an unexpected stranger makes her smile.
