Visual Arts

A curatorial showcase of themed exhibitions by Asian artists throughout the year, located at the unique spaces in Esplanade.

About Visual Arts 2022

In 2022, Esplanade commenced a new initiative of collaborating with collectives and independent, non-profit art spaces to organise exhibitions. This endeavour is an effort to include other creative practitioners, curatorial voices and platforms in the centre’s Visual Arts exhibitions.

Co-curated with Sa Sa Art Projects, Shaking Land and Water at Jendela (Visual Arts Space) brings together the works of artists Eng Rithchandaneth, Prak Dalin, Sao Sreymao, Syahrul Anuar, Juria Toramae and Zarina Muhammad (Cambodia and Singapore). The exhibition is a culmination of dialogues and discussions amongst the artists and the works presented excavate their shared interests in changing landscapes, especially the impacts and implications of human intervention on our environments and more-than-human worlds.

At the Esplanade Tunnel, Worlds and Spacing – 世界与空间 brings together three bodies of works by Maleonn (China) that traverses fantastical settings and realms to explore themes of communication, alienation, and insulation. This exhibition is co-presented by Singapore International Photography Festival and Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay.

Co-curated with Moving Picture Experiment Group, at the Community Wall, Heavy Rotations presents the works of Jon Cuyson (Philippines), Moe Myat May Zarchi (Myanmar) and Miti Ruangkritya (Thailand) to challenge the archive, and explore questions of how historical consciousness, social memories and private accounts are shaped and created in contemporary Southeast Asia.

Lastly, consistent with Esplanade's commitment to presenting commissioned large-scale, site-specific installations for the Esplanade Concourse, is PULSATE by Zul Mahmod (Singapore). The sound installation comprising reflective panels is centred around the concepts of reflection, reverberation and resounding and responds to events that have taken place in recent times and reflects on their impact on the individual and society.
