Esplanade Presents
By Simon Stone
Produced by LG Arts Center (South Korea)
(Intermission: 1 x 20mins)
Esplanade Theatre
Doyoung Song does not recognise this version of Seoul—tumultuous, free and unafraid of authority. Having left the country years ago after the death of her son, she returns to a city that is significantly unfamiliar, and a difficult situation: her family’s business is on the verge of bankruptcy, and her family home, gifted to her by her grandfather, is in danger of being lost.
Helmed by highly acclaimed director Simon Stone, this reinterpretation of Anton Chekhov's The Cherry Orchard is set in modern-day Seoul, South Korea. In a time of rapid and brutal change, a Chaebol family struggles to adapt to a world that has moved on without them, suffocated by a rising middle class and wealthy self-made entrepreneurs. Generational tensions erupt, and caught between hope and despair, tradition and innovation, the family is forced to eventually confront the cost of inaction.
Equal parts tragedy and comedy, The Cherry Orchard was Chekhov's final play, and considered one of his masterpieces. This adaptation by Stone premiered in Jun 2024 and marked the return of actress Doyeon Jeon to the theatre stage after 27 years. Well-known for her roles in You Are My Sunshine (2005) and Secret Sunshine (2007), for which she was awarded Best Actress at the 60th Cannes Film Festival, Jeon brings her acting prowess to the role of protagonist Doyoung Song. She stars alongside actor Haesoo Park of Squid Game fame, and a stellar all-Korean ensemble cast. The story unfolds on a masterfully designed set by celebrated architectural designer Saul Kim.
An intimate, bittersweet portrait that is deeply South Korean and yet universally moving, this must-watch take on The Cherry Orchard is a timely reflection of loss, change and social transformation. After 30 sold-out shows at its Seoul premiere, don't miss the original cast live on stage in Singapore.

It’s the cast that brings vibrant life to the complex characters, making their flaws endearing. The production‘s magic lies in its ability to transform characters who are pathetic, foolish, snobbish and incompetent into figures who are lovable, vulnerable and ultimately understandable.

Simon Stone (Director)
Simon Stone is an Australian writer and director, widely regarded as one of the most acclaimed theatremakers in the world. Born in Basel and educated at Cambridge, Stone returned to Australia in 2007 to found The Hayloft Project. The company’s first production, Frank Wedekind’s Spring Awakening, helped to establish and cement its reputation. He quickly became known as an inspiring director with a unique style. He likes to take pieces from the standard repertoire which, with the help of his cast, he reworks into intimate, almost cinematic performances. He often works on the basis of improvisation and characterisations suggested by a play, creating an entirely new script through which the original nevertheless shines. Stone frequently returns to the classics and mythology because he believes that they raise all the essential questions about the human condition. “You cannot make theatre based on fear or compromises; without polemics there is no art.”
Doyeon Jeon (Performer)
Doyeon Jeon is a South Korean actress. She made her film debut with The Contact (1997), a melodrama that established her as a leading actress. Her career reached new heights with You Are My Sunshine (2005). However, it was her role in Secret Sunshine (2007), directed by Lee Chang-dong, that cemented her status as one of Korea’s finest actresses. Her portrayal of a grieving mother navigating faith and despair won her Best Actress at the 60th Cannes Film Festival, making her the first Korean actor to receive such recognition.
Haesoo Park (Performer)
Haesoo Park is a South Korean actor. He is best known worldwide for portraying Sangwoo Cho in the first season of the Netflix hit series Squid Game, which earned him a nomination for the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series. Park started his career in theatre and has played many leading and supporting roles in plays and musicals. In 2014, he performed in The Chorus – Oedipus which was later presented by the Singapore International Festival of Arts. He subsequently expanded his career into film and television and achieved his breakthrough with Prison Playbook, one of the highest-rated Korean dramas.
Anton Chekhov (1860 – 1904)
Anton Chekhov was a Russian playwright and writer. His career as a playwright produced four classics, and his best short stories are held in high esteem by writers and critics. Chekhov renounced the theatre after the reception of The Seagull in 1896, but the play was revived to acclaim in 1898 by Konstantin Stanislavski's Moscow Art Theatre, which subsequently also produced Uncle Vanya and premiered his last two plays, Three Sisters and The Cherry Orchard. These four works present a challenge to the acting ensemble as well as to audiences, because in place of conventional action Chekhov offers a “theatre of mood” and a “submerged life in the text”. The plays that Chekhov wrote were not complex, but easy to follow, and created a somewhat haunting atmosphere for the audience.
