Dancers will pair up to form a circle while one calls out the dance moves for everyone to follow. Many moves have hand signals to complement the calls that are mostly in Spanish, and some in English or Spanglish. Most moves involve the swapping of partners. Flamenco is a popular Spanish dance style recognised by UNESCO as an Intangible Heritage of Humanity. Its distinctive features include the use of arms and fingers, posture and rhythmic footwork. It is no wonder that flamenco has such a diverse range of styles to channel the range of human emotions, be it joy, anger, sadness and solitude, sensuality and love.

Afro-Cuban Rumba

In Cuba, rumba is a generic term covering a variety of musical rhythms and associated dances. The rumba has its influences in the music brought to Cuba by Spanish colonisers as well as Africans brought to Cuba as slaves. Rumba developed in the Cuban provinces of Havana and Matanzas in the late 19th century. The energetic Afro-Cuban rumba is entirely different than ballroom rumba, or the African style of pop music called rumba. Rumba developed in rural Cuba, and is still danced in Havana, Mantanzas and other Cuban cities, although now it is infused with jazz and hip hop.

Bhangra

Bhangra is a traditional high-energy folk dance and a genre of music that originated in the northern state of Punjab, India. It was first performed during the month of Vesakhi, when Punjabi farmers would harvest their crops and celebrate the coming of spring.
A bhangra performance is typically six to eight minutes long, consisting of a variation of dance styles including bedi, dhamaal, jhummar, mirza, jugni/chaal and prop segments such as saaps and khundey, to name a few. Decades ago, bhangra music was performed live and consisted of instruments such as the dhol, chimta and algoze. With its growing popularity, bhangra transformed to include hip hop beats and other forms of western rhythms.

The most well-known form of samba is samba no pé (literally, "samba in the foot"). Famous for its extravagant costumes of beautiful ladies parading and dancing in brightly coloured feathers and sequins, it is one of the main features in the carnivals that Brazil is world famous for. Come join us to learn the fancy footwork and hip movements of this popular and fun Brazilian carnival dance!

Hip hop dance refers to street dance styles primarily performed to hip hop music. These classes are usually conducted to upbeat music and are not limited to just the latest hip hop hits but also music from various genres.
Each of the instructors has his or her own unique style and flavour. Expect an energetic class that not only teaches you hip hop movements and techniques, but also instils rhythm and precision in your muscle memory.

Danz People is one of Singapore’s premier dance studios whose curriculum includes hip hop, poppin’, jazz, street jazz, lyrical jazz, contemporary, adult ballet, and many more, catering to adults and children, with courses for absolute beginners as well. The studio also collaborates with the National Arts Council in providing arts education programme to schools and the public.
Danz People is the home of three big dance groups. Their aim is not only to represent the studio but to celebrate dance as a team. This one big family is composed of United Groovers for adults, Junior Groovers for teens and Mini Groovers for kids. They don’t just dance for fun, they dance to represent one big family united to exemplify harmonious excellence.

Classical Spanish music has a long history and is performed by orchestras around the world. It is rare, however, to present it with dance, which is also a beautiful heritage of Spain. Refined and elegant, it has drawn on balletic influences and distinctly Spanish elements of footwork, rhythm, attitude and spirit.
Come in comfortable attire and round-toe sturdy shoes to facilitate movement. Ladies can additionally wear a flare skirt.

The richness of Spain’s dance arts in Singapore is championed by the Rose Borromeo Spanish Dance Company (RBSDC).
From flamenco to Spanish classical dance, the balletic escuela bolera to regional dances, these diverse genres mark the different, exciting stages of development in the city.
With close connection to Spain, its language and culture, the RBSDC conducts regular programmes with the renowned Academia de Manuel Betanzos in Seville, an important source for flamenco, from which it has produced notable maestros such as Paloma Gómez, former Principal Dancer of Spain’s Ballet Nacional de España. It creates access, inspiration and experiences of high calibre Spanish dance arts.
For Footwork this year, the RBSDC looks forward to offering dance lovers yet another occasion to learn from distinguished professionals from Spain, and explore the charisma of the Spanish dance genres.

Contemporary dance draws on modern dance techniques and an array of still developing philosophies of movement based on study of the human body and body-mind inter-relationships to strengthen the body and increase flexibility.
Join us as we explore some of contemporary dance principles such as centering, alignment, gravity, breath, contraction, release, fall and recovery, suspension, balance and off-balance, tension and relaxation, opposition and emotion.
