Discover the joy of movement and fall in love with dance at da:ns festival’s Footwork workshops. Conducted by professional instructors, these basic workshops are designed for adults and youths with little or no experience in dance.

There’s no better way to fall in love with dance than to try dancing yourself. Footwork gives you the opportunity to learn popular dances from the experts and pick up some moves in the months leading up to the da:ns festival, held from 20 – 29 Oct 2017. Ballet (Baby-Wearing Mothers)

You’re never too young to start dancing! Share a special bond with your baby and fellow baby-wearing mothers through a fun and engaging ballet experience. Contemporary ballet is a genre of dance that combines traditional ballet with components and aspects of the modern dance. It allows greater range of upper body movement and is not constrained to the rigorously defined body lines and forms found in traditional, classical ballet. Its attributes come from the ideas and innovations of 20th century modern dance, including floor work and turning out of the legs.

A unique fusion of popular Latin street dances and hip hop, danced to a wide spectrum of Latin R&B, reggaeton, and salsa music. It incorporates a wide variety of latin footwork, body isolation and hip hop grooves. Participants will learn a short dance routine, focusing more on “shines” (non-partnerwork moves).

Salsa Casino

Dancers will pair up to form a circle while one calls out the dance moves for everyone to follow. Many moves have hand signals to complement the calls that are mostly in Spanish, and some in English or Spanglish. Most moves involve the swapping of partners. Participants will learn the moves as well as the names. Prior Salsa experience is a plus, but not a must.

Flamenco is a popular Spanish dance style recognised by UNESCO as an Intangible Heritage of Humanity. Its distinctive features include the use of arms and fingers, posture and rhythmic footwork. The dance is highly expressive and drawn from individual response to the song and the music, as well as from one’s life experiences. It is no wonder that flamenco has such a diverse range of styles to channel the range of human emotions, be it joy, anger, sadness and solitude, sensuality and love.

Please come in comfortable attire and round-toe sturdy shoes to facilitate movement. Ladies can additionally wear a flare skirt.

The richness of Spain’s dance arts in Singapore is championed by the Rose Borromeo Spanish Dance Company (RBSDC).

From flamenco to Spanish classical dance, the balletic escuela bolera to regional dances, these diverse genres mark the different, exciting stages of development in the city.

With close connection to Spain, its language and culture, the RBSDC conducts regular programmes with the renowned Academia de Manuel Betanzos in Seville, an important source for flamenco, from which it has produced notable maestros such as Paloma Gómez, former Principal Dancer of Spain’s Ballet Nacional de España. It creates access, inspiration and experiences of high calibre Spanish dance arts.

Learn critical dance techniques and the catchiest new moves in town, such as bounces and isolations, which are basic techniques transferrable to any dance genre! Making waves both locally and internationally, Celine Jessandra School of Music & Dance was founded in 2006. The school is well known for pioneering the korean vocal and dance “k-pop hallyu” wave in Singapore.

Staying at the forefront of the arts, Celine Jessandra leads and inspires individuals to embark upon their first foray into the arts, as well as provide stage and performance opportunities to those who show potential.

Many of the young talents who attend the school were handpicked or discovered by Celine, who took them under her tutelage, and are part of the CJ Crew.

Viennese Waltz (Date Night)

A relative of the slow waltz but with a much faster tempo, the Viennese waltz is danced to a rapid 1-2-3 beat, and is characterised by constant rotation while maintaining a smoothness and poise all the while.

Krumping is a street dance characterised by free, expressive, exaggerated, and highly energetic movement. It originated in America, and was invented by youth, who saw it as a way of escaping gang life and to release anger, aggression and frustration in a non-violent way. Bachata is a popular form of romantic Latin music and dance that originated in the countryside and the rural neighbourhoods of the Dominican Republic. It is a favourite in the Latin dance scene that can be danced slow and sensual or fast and upbeat. Lessons are taught from open to close embrace, including unique body isolations and footwork.

Lyrical hip hop is a fluid and more interpretive version of new style hip hop. The name lyrical comes from the word "lyrics" because dancers use the lyrics of a song or instrumental music to do certain movements or show expression. The goal of a lyrical dancer is to use gesture, facial expression, and controlled movements to execute their movements and emotions.

Danz People is one of Singapore’s premier dance studios whose curriculum includes hip hop, poppin’, jazz, street jazz, lyrical jazz, contemporary, adult ballet, and many more, catering to adults and children, with courses for absolute beginners as well. The studio also collaborates with the National Arts Council in providing arts education programme to schools and the public.

Danz People is the home of three big dance groups. Their aim is not only to represent the studio but to celebrate dance as a team. This one big family is composed of United Groovers for adults, Junior Groovers for teens and Mini Groovers for kids. Afro-Cuban Rumba

In Cuba, rumba is a generic term covering a variety of musical rhythms and associated dances. The rumba has its influences in the music brought to Cuba by Spanish colonisers as well as Africans brought to Cuba as slaves. Rumba developed in the Cuban provinces of Havana and Matanzas in the late 19th century. The energetic Afro-Cuban rumba is entirely different than ballroom rumba, or the African style of pop music called rumba. Rumba developed in rural Cuba, and is still danced in Havana, Mantanzas and other Cuban cities, although now it is infused with jazz and hip hop.

Paso doble is a theatrical Spanish dance. Traditionally, the man in the dance is characterised as the matador and the lady as his cape. The dancers may choose to enact the role of the torero, picador, banderillero, bull, or Spanish dancer, and may change roles throughout the dance.

Bhangra

Bhangra is a traditional high-energy folk dance and a genre of music that originated in the northern state of Punjab, India. It was first performed during the month of Vesakhi, when Punjabi farmers would harvest their crops and celebrate the coming of spring.

A bhangra performance is typically six to eight minutes long, consisting of a variation of dance styles including bedi, dhamaal, jhummar, mirza, jugni/chaal and prop segments such as saaps and khundey, to name a few. Decades ago, bhangra music was performed live and consisted of instruments such as the dhol, chimta and algoze. With its growing popularity, bhangra transformed to include hip hop beats and other forms of western rhythms.

West Coast Swing is a dynamic, living dance that is ever-evolving. Danced to popular songs of each decade, it also frequently adjusts to accommodate new dance styles. It can be danced slow and sexy, smooth and sophisticated, or fast and rhythmically to most types of music on the radio today, and incorporates many dance elements of hip hop and jazz. This means you can dance it anywhere and to almost anything. It is focused on improvisation and musical interpretation and is one of the most versatile and free partner dances in existence.

The Paso doble (double-step in Spanish) is a dance accompanied by a strong, lively beat and rousing music. It is influenced by the sound, drama and movement of a bullfight. Characteristic to the dance is the style of arms, posture, stance and footwork. Participants can dance individually and would not need partners at this Footwork workshop.

ACTFA School of Dance and Performing Arts has been training its students since 2005. The school has sent many students and teachers to perform, compete and teach both locally and internationally. Brazilian Samba (Ladies only)

The most well-known form of samba is samba no pé (literally, "samba in the foot"). Famous for its extravagant costumes of beautiful ladies parading and dancing in brightly coloured feathers and sequins, it is one of the main features in the carnivals that Brazil is world famous for. Come join us to learn the fancy footwork and hip movements of this popular and fun Brazilian carnival dance!

Hip Hop

Hip hop dance refers to street dance styles primarily performed to hip hop music. These classes are usually conducted to upbeat music and are not limited to just the latest hip hop hits but also music from various genres.

Each of the instructors has his or her own unique style and flavour. Expect an energetic class that not only teaches you hip hop movements and techniques, but also instils rhythm and precision in your muscle memory.

The studio also collaborates with the National Arts Council in providing arts education programme to schools and the public.

Danz People is the home of three big dance groups. Their aim is not only to represent the studio but to celebrate dance as a team. This one big family is composed of United Groovers for adults, Junior Groovers for teens and Mini Groovers for kids. They don’t just dance for fun, they dance to represent one big family united to exemplify harmonious excellence.

Classical Spanish

Classical Spanish music has a long history and is performed by orchestras around the world. It is rare, however, to present it with dance, which is also a beautiful heritage of Spain. Refined and elegant, it has drawn on balletic influences and distinctly Spanish elements of footwork, rhythm, attitude and spirit.

Come in comfortable attire and round-toe sturdy shoes to facilitate movement. Ladies can additionally wear a flare skirt.

The richness of Spain’s dance arts in Singapore is championed by the Rose Borromeo Spanish Dance Company (RBSDC).

From flamenco to Spanish classical dance, the balletic escuela bolera to regional dances, these diverse genres mark the different, exciting stages of development in the city.

With close connection to Spain, its language and culture, the RBSDC conducts regular programmes with the renowned Academia de Manuel Betanzos in Seville, an important source for flamenco, from which it has produced notable maestros such as Paloma Gómez, former Principal Dancer of Spain’s Ballet Nacional de España. It creates access, inspiration and experiences of high calibre Spanish dance arts.

For Footwork this year, the RBSDC looks forward to offering dance lovers yet another occasion to learn from distinguished professionals from Spain, and explore the charisma of the Spanish dance genres.

Contemporary

Contemporary dance draws on modern dance techniques and an array of still developing philosophies of movement based on study of the human body and body-mind inter-relationships to strengthen the body and increase flexibility.

Join us as we explore some of contemporary dance principles such as centering, alignment, gravity, breath, contraction, release, fall and recovery, suspension, balance and off-balance, tension and relaxation, opposition and emotion.
