Postcards are short letters that tell someone what they are missing or what they could experience in a faraway place. The Postcard Project encourages the imagination and creativity of children by asking them to create their own postcards using transparencies with special messages.
Upon receipt of these transparency postcards, visual artists will arrange thousands of transparent postcards into a stunning display that features light and shadows. Selected postcards will be read in Jendela (Visual Arts Space) from
7 – 9 Oct 2011 as part of a public performance during Octoburst!
We invite you to come here and experience your very own art on display!
The Postcard Project is for schools submissions only.
Theme: I See the Light
This year, the theme is, "I See the Light." Children will also have to write on the postcard around the same theme, "I See the Light," the meaning defined as "I see the truth." The narrative should revolve around any form of nature that sees the truth about the environment they live in. The young artists/writers can imagine they are something found in nature – a tree, a rock, an insect, a bird, a flower and what it's like for them to be part of this big, beautiful world.
What can I use to draw?
You can create your own postcards on used transparencies or any A5 material that light can shine through. Instead of using pencils and colour pencils (mediums that will not be able to stick onto transparencies/glossed-surfaces), we suggest that you can use oil-base felt pens, crayons, stain-glass paints, etc.
Also, do make sure that your paints are completely dry (not sticky!) and protected by a protective sheet so that the postcards will be intact when it arrives here for the exhibition.
What else accompanies the postcard?
An original write-up about your drawing on a separate sheet of paper/ card of not more than 100 words. See example below.
| I love being a tree! My leaves are the best thing about me. They give out oxygen and provide shade from the hot sun, and if you come close enough, I smell of nature.
When the wind blows, I sing my leafy song, "Swish, swish, swish!" I bet you know how to sing the song too!
Next time, when you see me, please give me a hug!
