SYNOPSIS
ENGLISH   |   中文
It is the time of the Song Dynasty (AD 960-1279) and Cheng Zi Cang, the womanising husband of Liu Yu Er, has decided to take on a beautiful concubine introduced to him by scholar Su Tung Bo. After Liu finds out and punishes Cheng by making him kneel all night by a pond, Cheng, spurred on by Su, attempts to divorce her.
Liu turns the tables by suing Su for instigating the breakup of her marriage, and Cheng for bigamy. But the case is dismissed first by the Minister of Justice who sympathises with Cheng and then again by the Emperor who also rules in Cheng’s favour as he has entrusted to Cheng the secret task of searching for beautiful women to be his concubines.
When Liu chides the Emperor for mishandling the case, he is infuriated and orders that poisoned wine be served to her. Will Liu drink the poisoned wine or will there be a happy ending?
When Cantonese opera The Lion’s Roar (also known as When the Lioness Roars), written by famous Hong Kong playwright the late Tang Di Sheng, hit the big screen in 1959, audiences flocked to cinemas, drawn by its stars, the legendary Cantonese opera actresses Yam Kim Fai and Pak Suet-Sin, as well as the opera’s comic tale. Today, When the Lioness Roars remains well-loved by fans of Cantonese opera.

(With English and Chinese surtitles)
