SYNOPSIS
Studio Kura, a former rice warehouse set against a stunning backdrop of mountains and rice fields in the Japanese countryside of Fukuoka, was where artist Shih-Yun Yeo drew inspiration for this series of works.
Rendered in simplicity, Yeo uses natural objects like twigs, leaves and grass to create these paintings. The use of bare twigs, for example, makes for an interesting and unpredictable visual impression on paper. She would first pour Chinese ink on paper, and then move the twigs to create positive and negative spaces. In a form of art that is typically associated with the past, the artist creates a vocabulary of relevance to present reality. That perhaps these movements of ink in the hands of Nature, reminds one to "go with the flow", to embrace the "now" of each moment and to make each step in the vastness of life, count for something.
