The Olympic Games in Beijing opened with an ancient tune that stunned its many spectators. Played by guqin master Chen Leiji, it brimmed with exquisite delicacy in a performance whose beautiful, ancient sounds lingered…
Come experience the pure and meditative sounds of the guqin performed by Chen, featuring famous solo works, Flowing Water, The Guangling Verse and Three Variations on the Plum Blossom Theme. Then welcome a cheerful pairing of the guqin and xiao as Chen pairs up with Chinese flute master Du Cong for guqin and xiao duet Wild Geese Descending on the Sandbank, as well as ensemble performances of Fire Phoenix and The Brahmin by Arts Sphere Chinese Chamber Ensemble, led by conductor Quek Ling Kiong.
About the guqin and Fu Gu Dian:
The guqin is a seven-stringed Chinese musical instrument with over 3,000 years of history. In this performance, Master Chen Leiji will be playing a guqin known as the Fu Gu Dian, which was once owned by the first Emperor of the Song Dynasty.
