SYNOPSIS
Director of Teater Ekamatra, Zizi Azah, looks at how Malay theatre has evolved from traditional roots and amateur stagings to become a wide industry that includes the ethnic, traditional, the contemporary and the post-modern. Works of seminal writers and directors of Singapore Malay Theatre such as Atin Amat, Alin Mosbit, Noor Effendy Ibrahim and Alfian Saat will be discussed, along with how Malay Theatre will evolve in the near future to incorporate artistic elements of the 21st Century.
Zizi’s involvement in the Malay arts began at a young age. She has written and directed theatre performances since she was a teenager and at 29, she is now a leading figure of a new generation of theatre professionals. Initially she began her career in theatre in the area of production and stage management but she has proven in recent years to be adept in writing and directing. Her plays, in both Malay and English language, have received critical acclaim. To date she has been at the artistic helm of seven plays and she looks forward to expanding her body of work. She also lectures at arts schools in Singapore.
