SYNOPSIS
This immersive audio-visual installation explores how sacred sounds and music fit in to the context of today's contemporary soundscape. Zai Tang’s work gives focus to the spaces in which they originate (e.g. churches and temples) then shifting these sounds into a neutral environment.
Tang’s research involved journeys around Singapore, and to other parts of South East Asia, visiting places of worship, recording and collecting material to use for his final work as well as studying the variety of sonic environments in which sacred sounds and music reside today.
Through this, he explores how different people relate and respond to sacred sounds within their local environment, looking to answer several questions. Most notably, he compares the perception of sacred sounds by people living in urban cities suffering from a greater influx of people, industrial development and increased traffic as opposed to rural areas where nature is more abundant.
