SYNOPSIS
Dance in Asia dates back to more than a thousand years. Originating in royal courts, ornate temples or villages, traditional Asian dance can express a sacred ceremony, an epic story of love and war, or a communal celebration. Rasas brings audiences on a journey of discovery and understanding. In traditional Asian dance, children as young as 5 years old learn difficult exercises that shape their bodies preparing them for the intricate dance movements for their classical dances. Their basic training can last for up to 12 years, and part of that time is dedicated to spiritual preparations.
Rasas at the Esplanade Outdoor Theatre presents the rare opportunity to watch spectacular large ensemble dances by both adult and young children dancers from Bali and Cambodia. Also a first for the festival, are the Rasas Workshops for Parents and Children taught by these artists. At the Esplanade Concourse, audiences will get to learn simple gestures and movements through fun dance demonstrations from countries like Thailand and Japan.
