SYNOPSIS
Rasa Unmasked explores the ancient theory of Navarasa – which forms the basis of much classical Indian theatre and dance such as kathakali, odissi, bharathanatyam and kuchipudi - and places it in a contemporary framework
The Navarasa refers to the nine key emotions expressed in dance through gestures and facial expressions. These are shringaaram (love), veeram (heroism or valour), karunyam (compassion), adbhutam (wonderment), haasyam (mirth and laughter), bhayaanakam (terror), bibhatsam (disgust), raudram (anger) and shantham (serenity).
Indian-Australian bharatanatyam and kuchipudi dancer-choreographer Anandavalli and Malaysian odissi dancer-choregrapher Ramli Ibrahim bring together their diverse cultural backgrounds and shared passion for Indian dance in a bold and sensuous new dance work that explores the universality of mankind’s emotions
With a hauntingly beautiful soundscape by composer/musician, Alex Dea, blending Javanese gamelan, carnatic (Indian classical) vocals and percussion. Choreographed and performed by Anandavalli and Ramli Ibrahim, with dancers from Malaysia’s Sutra Dance Theatre and Australia’s Lingalayam Dance Company.
