SYNOPSIS
In September 2009, the dancers of Nan Jombang were rehearsing in the city of Padang when an earthquake struck. Barely escaping injury when the building collapsed around them, the ordeal not only inspired them to accelerate plans for their own choreographic centre, but also create Tarian Malam (Night Dances).
Nan Jombang is known for their riveting live soundscapes comprising chants, claps and body percussion by dancers at every performance. In this piece, they reflect upon the fortunes and endeavours of humanity and artists through the violent tendencies of natural disasters. Haunting wails of women, deep rhythmic pounding of drums and powerful choreography all come together to create a stunning emotive performance that sets out to captivate you from start to end.
Choreographer Ery Mefri is celebrated for his signature style of marrying Minangkabau performing arts traditions (drumming, dance, and martial arts) with spirituality and contemporary movement. He continues to extend the conversation between traditional and contemporary forms while articulating his passionate belief in the importance of maintaining the intrinsic matrilineal culture and traditions identified with West Sumatran culture.
This work is co-commissioned by Darwin Festival, Esplanade - Theatres on the Bay and Brisbane Powerhouse.
