The Tamil classic, Silappathikaram, describes Poompuhar as a glorious city located along the seashore that flourished on account of trade. The Kaanal Vari Paadalgal in the epic bear testimony to the cultural richness of that epoch. Singapore, also a coastal city akin to Poompuhar, is thriving as a global hub for commerce and the arts today.
