Ahead of Bizet's Carmen, Edouard Lalo ignited the French fascination with all things Spanish, with his Symphonie Espagnole. Premiered by Pablo de Sarasate in 1875, it remains Lalo’s best-known work. Haydn’s grief at the death of Mozart in 1791 found expression in the contemplative slow movement of his otherwise light and witty Symphony No. 98.
