Traumerei Schumann
Nasreddin's Medley Composed by Li Bin Yang, arranged by Lim Kiong Pin
Tunes of Shanxi Opera Yan Hai Deng
Winter Hunting Zhang Zhi Liang
The sheng is one of the oldest forms of Chinese musical instruments, commonly used in palace and court processions, and with a history of more than 3,000 years. It is believed to have been exported in the 18th century to Europe where it earned its nickname of "the Chinese bamboo mouth-organ" as one can play on it up to six notes simultaneously. Consisting of vertical pipes, it possesses a rich and dynamic sound that is clear and metallic.
Now, hear talented musicians of Singapore Chinese Orchestra - Guo Chang Suo, Ong Yi Horng, Seah Kar Wee and Lim Kiong Pin - perform a variety of music styles to showcase the diverse musical possibilities of the sheng. Highlights include Yan Hai Deng's Tunes of Shanxi Opera, Benjamin Lim's Zen, Zhang Zhi Liang's most famous work Winter Hunting, one of Schumann's best known pieces, Traumerei, and a newly arranged work by local composer Tan Kah Yong.
