“Lise de la Salle is a talent in a million” - Gramophone
| John Nelson | conductor |
| Lise de la Salle | piano |
| Saint- Saëns | Piano Concerto No. 2 in G minor, Op. 22 (24’) |
| Mahler | Symphony No. 5 in C-sharp minor (68’) |
Though his most popular concerto today, Saint-Saëns’ Concerto No. 2 was not a success at its premiere: its abrupt changes of mood prompted the famous critical comment: “It begins with Bach and ends with Offenbach.” The nostalgic Fifth remains one of Mahler’s most popular symphonies – thanks to the radiant Adagietto played by strings and harp and made famous through its use in the film Death in Venice; in Herbert von Karajan’s words: “A great performance of the Fifth is a transforming experience.”
