SYNOPSIS
South Indian bharatanatyam dancer Mythili Prakash pays homage to literary legend Rabindranath Tagore in celebration of the Nobel laureate’s 150 birth centennial with her interpretation of his 1933 dance drama, Chandalika (The Untouchable Girl). Based on an ancient Buddhist fable, Chandalika is centered on a lonely “untouchable” and social outcast called Prakriti. Seemingly a dramatic story about caste, unrequited love, and magic, Chandalika is in fact the story of each of us. It tells the story of an individual’s search for love, beauty, and freedom, all of which are ideals we contain within ourselves, yet continually seek externally.
