SYNOPSIS

“This play is a search in the world of Hamlet through the eyes of clowns. The clown has fascinated me for many years and this motif appears again and again in all my work including my film work. It is through the eyes of a clown that I wanted to explore the vast world of Hamlet. The result is a comic way in which the actors have improvised the various parts of the play and yet touched upon the tragedy of the young prince”. - Rajat Kapoor (Director)

Hamlet Deconstructed!

A bunch of clowns are putting up Shakespeare’s classic play, Hamlet. They sometimes misinterpret the text, sometimes find new meanings in it, sometimes try to understand it and very often make a mess of it.

They use some phrases from Shakespeare’s original piece and mixed it with gibberish. They even edit the text, throw out some important scenes, and make a mess of the order of things as if the pages got mixed up. In essence, the clowns interpret this classic play in their own way.

Hamlet – The Clown Prince won the Best Play, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor and Best Costume Design awards at this year’s Mahindra Excellence in Theatre Awards held in New Delhi.

Earth Hour at Esplanade on 27 March 2010

In line with our efforts to contribute to a greener environment, Esplanade will be participating in the Earth Hour project spearheaded by WWF (World Wide Fund For Nature). Pledging our support for Earth Hour 2010, Esplanade will dim and turn off the lights around the centre from 8.30pm â 9.30pm on Saturday, 27 March 2010. All operations in the centre will continue as normal.

For the enjoyment of all audience members, all events start promptly at the time printed on the ticket. Please be seated 15 minutes before the performance start-time. Entry for latecomers and re-admission will not be permitted until the first appropriate pause in the programme or intermission, if any.

Patrons are advised that with effect from 12 March 2004, an administrative fee of $5 per ticket is payable for all Replacement Tickets issued.

Please note the following conditions: - Replacement Tickets can only be issued for performances with reserved seating.
- No Replacement Ticket will be issued for general admission or 'free seating' performances.
- Replacement Tickets are issued subject to verification of patron's details against our transaction records.
