SYNOPSIS
If you're after dark, bloody romance with a twist, look no further. – BBC Online (on the album Lunático)
Armed with a debut album (La Revancha del Tango) released in 2000, Paris-based Gotan Project helped make tango sexy all over again, bringing the cool sounds of Argentina into far corners of the world. Honoured as one of The Guardian’s Top 100 albums of the decade, La Revancha del Tango led many to concur that Gotan Project’s music is equally at home in the trendiest New York clubs and on the beaches of Rio de Janeiro.
The trio was founded in 1999 by members of different nationalities – Philippe Cohen Solal (France), Eduardo Makaroff (Argentina), and Christoph H. Müller (Switzerland). Their band name is a tribute to The Tango Project, the name of a 1982 compilation album featuring several American classical musicians who came together to record a tango album and helped revive the popularity of tango music. A wordplay involving the reversal of syllables turned the word “Tango” into “Gotan”.
With sophomore album Lunático (2006), Gotan Project breathed more live recording and jazz influence into their sound. With other musicians following in their footsteps and emulating their styles, they have learned to appreciate the fact that imitation can be seen as another form of compliment.
Many of their songs have cropped up in popular movies and television series. For example, Santa Maria (del Buen Ayre) from the first album was featured in Shall We Dance? (2004), while another track El Capitalismo Foraneo found its way into a scene in Ocean’s Twelve (2004). Their music has also surfaced in notable American TV shows like Nip/Tuck and Sex and the City.
After two million in record sales and 400 concerts, they are back with their third studio album, Tango 3.0 (2010). Mixing new-age tango with electronic elements like samples, beats and breaks, the album is poised to propel Gotan Project into the new decade with its cinematic vision and its invocation of not only Buenos Aires but also New Orleans, Nashville and the backstreets of New York. Shall we tango?
