Prepare yourself for a bold retelling of Giselle that will pierce your heart and mind. Mats Ek’s radical vision of the revered 19th century ballet premiered in 1982 and remains an iconic work in the 21st century. One of the most influential dancemakers today, Ek is known for overthrowing ballet conventions and bringing to light the tormented psychology of classical characters.
In Ek's Giselle, the eponymous heroine is a barefoot island girl who ends up in a lunatic asylum after the devastation of Albrecht’s betrayal. Profoundly moving and deeply affecting, this reinterpretation examines the meaning of humanity through Giselle’s inner struggle as she is torn by the forces of the powerful and the weak, and of life and death. While retaining the two-act narrative structure and original score by Adolphe Adam, Ek introduces new dimensions to the notion of love and redemption against a commentary on social divisions and the line between normality and madness. With its expressionist dance idiom and surrealistic setting, this Giselle is signature Ek – a fascinating and layered work that is a tragedy of the modern age.
Lyon Opera Ballet, led by Yorgos Loukos, is renowned for its versatility, risk-taking and superb ensemble of dancers. Reflecting the currents of influence in the world of dance, the company has performed works by some of the best contemporary choreographers of the day from Ek to Forsythe and Naharin to Cunningham.
