SYNOPSIS
"Dancers' swishing movements imitating calligraphic brushstrokes; giant pages falling on top of a dancer, or being flicked in and out of view as if on a vast iPad – all this is beautifully done."
– The Telegraph
"A rich, intelligent, sprawling work which communicates – and perhaps, for some, passes on – his deep admiration for his subject"
– Total Theatre Review

Experience the magic of Japanese manga in TeZukA, a visually stunning work by acclaimed Belgian choreographer Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui. A dazzling multimedia homage to the "Godfather of anime" Osamu Tezuka, whose influential works during post-war Japan have made a lasting impact on Japanese culture, Cherkaoui brings to life many of the characters from his comics such as Astro Boy and Black Jack. Using spoken text, calligraphy, song, martial arts and dance, the choreographer recreates Tezuka's vision of a world without prejudice - a reflection that continues to be relevant today.
With an international cast of 11 performers, three musicians and a calligrapher, Tezuka's original illustrations will be projected alongside video art by Taiki Ueda and live brush strokes by Tosui Suzuki, infused with a specially commissioned score from award-winning composer Nitin Sawhney. Using the dancers' movements to trace the physical evolution of Tezuka's drawings - from a line on a blank page to a single Japanese kanji (letter) to a fully-formed manga character – Cherkaoui's TeZukA is a feast for the eyes that celebrates an artist at the very heart of contemporary Japanese culture.
