SYNOPSIS
A festival component since 2007, the Bright Young Things segment has deepened its focus this year on the developmental process of the young musicians. Auditions, which began in early January, identified nine 15 to 23-year-old local talents who underwent intensive rehearsals over eight weeks, headed by local instructor-mentors jazz guitarist Andrew Lim, drummer Soh Wen Ming, contemporary music educator Ramu Thiruyanam, pianist Joshua Wan and bassist Andrew Klein.
The Early Trio
13 March 2010, 5:30-6:00pm
Usually the first few to arrive to every rehearsal, these three jazz fanatics have decided to name themselves exactly that – The EARLY Trio. Paying homage to jazz luminaries including Wayne Shorter in Yes or No and Charlie Parker in Dexerity, Rachma Lim on piano, Benjamin Low on drums and Jase Sng on bass, with guest flutist Raghavendran s/o Rajasekaran are set to impress!
Jive Collective
14 March 2010, 5:30-6:00pm
A piano trio that celebrates the true collaboration of different styles and ideas, Jive Collective intends to (in their own words) play hot, exciting jazz that makes people sit up and listen. Pianist Joel Chua, drummer Mohamed Rafaee bin Mahmood and bassist Seow Yi Zhe will also feature guest vocalist Clarice Handoko in the peppy Bye Bye Blackbird and the heart-breaking Body and Soul, and violinist Jensen Tan with his rendition of I’m Coming Virginia.
