SYNOPSIS
“ Bajofondo’s beloved tango depends on impulsive shifts of tempo and dynamics: hesitations and rushes, passionate crescendos.” – New York Times
It’s icy electronic programming with samples and beats, lyrical Argentinian tango with live orchestration, gritty street raps, infectious Uruguayan candombe drumming, hard-driving rock, syncopated milonga rhythms, and sexy funk riffs… all stirred into one hot, steaming, melting pot. This is the sound of Buenos Aires and Montevideo today. This is the sound of Bajofondo.
Bajofondo began in the early 2000s as a project by Oscar-winning Los Angeles-based Argentinian musician, super-producer and film music composer (Babel, Brokeback Mountain, 21 Grams) Gustavo Santaolalla. The project brought together Santaolalla, Uruguayan DJ and producer Juan Campodónico and pianist and DJ Luciano Supervielle, and resulted in 2002's Bajofondo Tango Club, blending tangos, electronic beats and samples by guest vocalists and musicians to rave reviews and awards such as a Premio Gardel and Latin Grammy.
Since then, Bajofondo has mushroomed into a collective of individually successful artists with Santaolalla and Campodónico at the core and with guest vocalists and musicians ranging from Argentina’s most important rock vocalist, Gustavo Cerrati, Uruguayan star Jorge Drexler and the late tango legend Lágrima Ríos, to Spanish rapper Mala Rodriguez, Nelly Furtado and Elvis Costello. The collective has toured the world, performing at the biggest world and electronica music festivals such as Roskilde in Denmark, Womad in England, Cactus Festival in Belgium, Pirineos Sur Festival in Spain, Pohoda in Slovaquia, as well as across Europe, the USA and UK, and still found the time to release the award-winning Bajofondo Remixed (2005) and the real-time-recorded Mar Dulce (2008).
The Village Voice has described their music as “exhilarating” and The New York Times has described it as “imperfect, immediate humanity”. Whatever your take, the culturally-rooted yet utterly contemporary music of Bajofondo, inspired by the soundscape of the Rio de la Plata region today, will strip away inhibitions with its swirl of colours, flavours and textures.
Bajofondo is comprised of Gustavo Santaolalla (guitar, percussion, vocals, backup vocals), Juan Campodónico (programming, beats, samples, guitar), Luciano Supervielle (piano, keyboards, scratch), Javier Casalla (violin), Martín Ferrés (bandoneon), Gabriel Casacuberta: upright bass, electric bass), Adrián Sosa (drums) and Verónica Loza (VJ, visuals).
