SAF 2010: Acoustic Evening – Nitin Sawhney

Dear Benson,

I would like to thank your ground staff for their professional and proactive customer service.

My wife and I attended the Cloud Gate Dance performance last night. My wife had a bad fall 4 weeks ago resulting in a fractured femur. She was operated on and is currently not able to walk, having to depend on crutches and wheelchair.

We do not want to miss the dance performance, and so we purchased tickets and requested for seats convenient for her coming in wheelchair.

When I drove my car to the car park drop off point, I requested help from the car park supervisor who immediately called for assistance via his walkie talkie. Almost immediately a male usher appeared and wheeled my wife to her seat while I parked my car. In the theatre, another female usher politely showed me where she had placed our wheelchair ….

When the show ended and the hall light was on, another male usher came to us without us having to wait, and accompanied us through the wheelchair passage, all the way to B2 car park almost right up to my car, only upon our insistence that he agreed to leave us at the exit door to car park and returned to his usher duty.

Congratulations to you for having trained such good staff

I almost pulled out because I was not used to the intensive lessons and workshops. However, with the encouragement and support from Mdm Huang, I persevered with the lessons and now I feel more confident. At first, it was very difficult to juggle the diabolo and spin it at the same time. I practiced till my hands hurt, but now I know that nothing is impossible if I keep trying, and if I put in the hard work I am able to achieve many things in life.

Thank you very much for taking time off to conduct the Learning Journey for the students. They learnt many new facts about the Theatre and Concert Hall. They were also very excited about attending concerts or plays in the various venues in future because with the newly-acquired knowledge, they can learn to appreciate the performances holistically.  It was indeed an eye-opener.

It was meaningful to bring the wishing spheres around Singapore to the people who are unable to write their wishes on the spheres at the stations in the malls. Seeing their faces filled with hope while writing their wishes was a most pleasant sight…

That is what I look for in art - an experience that teaches me to see a subject differently, that opens me to other possibilities that I would not have thought of and which enables me to approach the world armed with new knowledge. That is the real payoff that has come from spending $600 million on the Esplanade and paying for its programmes - the ability to offer this sort of experience to the thousands who cross the art venue's threshold. Every time I stroll through the Esplanade's free performing spaces and attend performances, I wonder how many seeds of inspiration are planted in the children who are there with their families or teenagers whom I spot in the audience… All these are intangible bonuses which should not be taken for granted.

Through dialogue sessions, centre tours, talks, workshops and internship opportunities, Esplanade raises its awareness among different publics, creating a bond between the centre and its audiences. It helps artists develop through international collaborations, commissions and artist residency programmes so that Asian works may be presented locally and internationally.

The Singapore arts scene has grown exponentially in the last decade, thanks in no small way to the opening of the Esplanade in 2002 and the continued good work put in by the National Arts Council (NAC) to develop local talent and stage the annual arts festival..

One of the most significant progresses that mark the rise of artistic and cultural pursuits in Singapore undoubtedly falls on the architectural marvel and performance arts centre, Esplanade. Opened on 12 October 2002, the Esplanade hosts 2,400 performances in its two major chambers (Theatre and Concert Hall) ... Also known as “Theatres on the Bay”, Esplanade has done a great service to revive the people’s passion for quality performance arts.

NTCH [National Theatre Concert Hall] has become one of my favourite cultural centres in the world, alongside the Esplanade in Singapore, the Arts Centre in Melbourne, and the Lincoln Centre in New York. I hope one day, sooner rather than later, I can proudly include my country's cultural centre in this list.
